Topic: MF1 and PCMCIA or Cardbus to PCIe/Other

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can steer me in the right direction.

I currently have a 2008 MBP working well with a Cardbus adapter and my MF1. I want to build a new i7 desktop machine but reluctant to spend another £200 on a PCIe card as I'm not sure how much life is left in my MF1.

Has anyone else managed to successfully use either the cardbus or PCMCIA adapter with a modern mainboard?

Regards,

Scott

Re: MF1 and PCMCIA or Cardbus to PCIe/Other

You could perhaps try this PCMCIA to PCI-e Express card slot adapter for

Desktop pc; http://www.hwtools.net/Adapter/CB242A.html (or Amazon.com)

Laptop:PCMCIA (Cardbus 2) to Expresscard slot: Startech CB2CE (Amazon.co.uk)

Re: MF1 and PCMCIA or Cardbus to PCIe/Other

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately the caveat on their website of *Not all of compatibility is guaranteed doesn't provide me with enough confidence to order one!

Re: MF1 and PCMCIA or Cardbus to PCIe/Other

No one can unconditionally guarantee compatibility of such adapters with each and every other piece of hardware out there - and neither can we guarantee compatibility of the Cardbus with this adapter. Try it out and return it if it doesn't work.

Decided to hunt again for options as my Multiface is gathering dust. Have found and ordered this:

I'll report back if it works.

Re: MF1 and PCMCIA or Cardbus to PCIe/Other

Scott,
The link you provided is for an expresscard adapter while the thread seems to be about cardbus (PCi).

I just installed such a pci express adapter (€10 on ebay) and it seems to work fine so far : I dared to update the firmware through it: they say it's kind of foolproof and I couldn't wait to check it out smile.
An expresscard to PCiE adapter seems to be perfectly "transparent" to the OS (W10/64), as opposed to the PCMCIA to PCi adapter I used for the cardbus, one of those with a Ricoh chip: it needed its own driver and appeared as a PCMCIA device in Computer management in both XP, W7, W8 and W10.

This particular adapter I got for cheap on  on Ebay seems to be well made; it  had my preference because it will accept only 34mm cards and is less likely to cause trouble than the 34/54mm ones.. I also found front panel  adapters, which might sometimes be more suitable (as in rack-mounted PC's) and are only marginally more expensive.

On a side note, I never heard about a cardbus to PCiE adapter that I would trust, although I found a couple that seemed to be able to handle low tech but certainly not a Digiface with 52 I/O ! As far as Multiface/Digiface go, cardbus goes to PCI, expresscard to PCiE.

Let us know how well you fare with your experiments.

Roger.

This guy did it

I did it, and it's working perfectly on Win 7/8.1/10 x64.
