Topic: Understanding RME Remote

Hey Guys,

i just got into RME stuff and i am looking for a setup to record at least 32 channels and maybe more to my mac
i worked until now with a standard usb audio interface (focusrite 18i20)
i want to remote control the input gain from my mac
i thought about getting the digiface usb, but as i understand it, it won't support remote
so what about the madiface xt
what converter do i need and how do i remote all of them? do i need a remote splitter and what cable at all
i am also open to new setups smile
thx for any help and have a great day

Re: Understanding RME Remote

32 channels ..
What type of channels ...
analog or digital

if analog, Mic or line or Instrument
if digital, what type, ADAT, MADI, .. ?!

What do you mean exactly by "it doesnt support remote" ?

i have mic line and instrument
the digiface hasn't a remote out and as far as i know it's the way u can control the input gain via total mix

Re: Understanding RME Remote

The digiface has only digital inputs and outputs (ADAT).
I dont understand that you consider buying the product which has no line and mic inputs.

How many mic, line, instrument inputs do you require ?
What is your budget ?

ah yeah i should have said i want to use it with the adi 8 ds. sry for that

i will use it in a studio project with changing instruments and performer
so flexibility is important

combi ins would be great
at least 6 inst. ins, more appreciated, but i could also get di instead

i don't want something bad cause of budget
so semthing really good without wasting my money, also my plan was to get maybe one converter at the start and expand from tomw to time

And where are the instr inputs on the adi 8 ds ?

Re: Understanding RME Remote

UFX II or UFX+ and Ocatmic XTC.

Octamic XTC is the only RME device which can be used as AUX device in TotalMix FX.
Remote controlling XTC via "Midi over MADI".
Especially MADI is of good use, you only need one optical cable.

http://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/inde … Cber-MADI/

Expandable up to 8 Octamic XTC.

The XTC is very flexible. 8 Mic inputs.
The 1st 4 can be used also as symetrical inputs.
The 2nd 4 inputs can be used for asymmetric connections and as instr. input.

Also it can perform format conversion to ADAT and AES (4x).

Great flexible units.

And the UFX II / + give to you DuRec.

You can also make use of it in a guitar rig i.e.:

the ufx + looks good
so i can use the octamic via usb for remote? and is the 48 and inst also remoteable?

Re: Understanding RME Remote

What you mean by "remote".

Up to 8 Octamic XTC - or a mix of other devices - can be connected via optical fibre (MADI).

The XTC has the advantage to be remote controlled by "MIDI over MADI" by using some unused bits in the MADI protocol.
So you do not need any other cabling to remote control the XTC from the TotalMix FX instance of your UFX+.

And by this you can digitally save gain settings etc of the XTC(s) by TotalMix FX Snapshots and Workspaces of the UFX+.

See these articles, also containing information about the ease of MADI setup:

http://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/inde … Cber-MADI/

http://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/inde … 8-RME-UFX/

Latency compensation is also being performed automatically by each device connected via MADI.
Manual configuration also possible.

MADI is great .. less cables .. up to 2km length.

And if you use higher sample frequencies, you can connect still up to 4 XTCs @96 and 2 XTCs @192.

awesome! thank u for that link! especially since it's in german!

until now i never worked that much with madi
gonna change that real quick

you can use multiple rme interfaces at once?
that would be absolutely insane

but that setup looks great
thank you so much for your help and patience with my nooby questions !
