Topic: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Just bought a brand new UFX II and ARC remote....

I'm now getting weird distortion which sounds like a sample rate mangler / bit crusher FX on the master output.

So everything is fine, I'm listening to music, then randomly all of a sudden this distortion comes.

This is now happening around 10 times a day.

The only way it goes away again if I change sample rate to a different rate (then it vanishes) and then change back to the one I was previously at.

Then maybe 30 minutes to maximum a few hours later the distortion will randomly come back and then I have to change the same rate again to get rid of it.

Not what I expect with a 2000 euro brand new interface.....

I used the flash tool to update to the latest versions of everything..... 17, 11, 7, 15.

And I installed the latest drivers: Fireface USB Driver v3.08

I'm running a mac with OSX 10.13.6

I emailed support two days ago but haven't heard back yet so am asking here if anyone knows what the hell this is and if there is a fix.... right now I'm sort of intending to return the interface because this is super annoying and obviously not right but hopefully there is a fix for this or I am doing something wrong which you guys can suggest a cure for....

Thanks!

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Hi Kronier,
I have the same problems but with a madiface USB. See video in the link.
Tried all ports on my macbook 2018 pro 15" (running 10.13.6), new usb cable, drivers 2.22 and 3.08, latest firmware.
Don't know what to do.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Did you solve the problem?

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

I am having the same bit crusher issue with a Madiface Pro Firmware v69 and driver v3.08. Computer is a Macbook Pro 15" 2018 running OSX 10.13.6.

I do not have this issue with my Fireface UFX though.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

My fireface UC works stable with MBP2018 PRO. Even with 2.22 driver. Seems like some units have a problem with USB-C. Is it a driver thing? On my MBP 2014 the madiface is rocksolid.
It also happens with system audio btw.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

To analyze this problem more check the operating system's log. Open the console app and search for 'RME' in the top line.

If you don't find RME you could still check the log messages around the time the bitcrusher effect started.

Users of the latest MacBooks should make sure they have the current firmware update installed and also downloaded the Intel Power Gadget to verify their CPU did not start throttling (running at a much lower speed).

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

System's log no mention of 'RME'. No CPU thottling. Happens even with system audio during playback of just spotify and no CPU usage...

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

I also have an older 2014 Macbook Pro and the Madiface Pro works fine with it using the in-built USB ports. There is definitely some weird compatibility/firmware glitch with these newer RME interfaces and the new Macbook Pro 2018 models and/or High Sierra 10.13.6/USB-C.

Question: does the bit crusher effect go away after some time, for example a minute, or will it stay until reset?

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

It will stay until reset, which can be done by selecting a different sample rate in the Fireface USB settings app as demonstrated by jackvdven's Youtube video.

Makes it clear this is an Apple issue...

Have you installed the overheating update from a few weeks ago?

Prevents the CPU from throttling back because the temperature rises too fast.

Where do you watch CPU throttling?

Does not go away. Have to reset the sample rate.

Intel power gadget. No CPU throtteling so not an Apple issue. There a cases with the same 'bitcrushing' issues on 2016 and 2017 laptops.

There are also cases of Intel Power Gedget ruining OSX when installed on Sierra. Not exactly confidence inspiring...

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Here is a debug driver which gives a lot more feedback into the Console's log file in case of audio problems:

https://archiv.rme-audio.de/download/dr … _debug.zip

The driver version is 3.09. Please note:

This driver has no changes in code and functionality. It is only intended for users that would like to help us in identifying the problems outlined in this thread.

Within the console select your computer in the upper left, then use 'RME' as search value in the upper right. Interesting parts can be selected and copied/pasted into a text file (CMD-A, CMD-C, CMD-V).

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Im having this same problem with a Fireface UC on Win10.

Specially while using browser and litening from there, this weird crushing sound appears and it goes away if I open an audio app such as Soundforge or if I stop/play the audio. Its completely random but happens every minute or so.

Looks like my problem got fixed by changing the USB port from an USB 2 in the rear to a USB3 port...weird as the UC is USB2 so it should be the same...Maybe it was it shared port but I doubt it.

I am seeing this pattern repeatedly in my logs with the debug driver. When this happens the audio 'glitches' though it seems to recover. Looks like this issue might be power management related?

Is the long-term bitcrusher gone and replaced by the glitch? Or do you still get that bit-crusher effect?

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Hello,
I’m experiencing a similar issue with my Mac Book Pro Mid 2018 2,6 GHz 512GB with the latest OS update installed and my Fireface UCX.
I’m getting dropouts/glitches (no bit crushing) in irregular intervals of cup to 2h. The dropouts are only short isolated events.
I’m using the 3.09 debugging Driver “MC” posted in this threat and the UCX Firmware v47.

Note: I’ve been using this very interface for years with my Mid 2012 Mac Book Pro Retina and Sierra as my latest OS without any problems whatsoever.

I was referred to this threat by Daniel Fuchs from the RME Support.

When I search the console for RME, I get the following abnormalities which I only see when the problem occurs:

I’d also like to mention that this issue can’t be related to the specific MacBook Pro 2018 model I’m using, as I returned my first unit yesterday (because of this issue) and swapped it for the one I’m using now. As mentioned: I’m still experiencing the same issues.

EDIT: I realise it might be beneficial to mention that the problem occurs while watching youtube/listening to music via the Tidal app etc, so no CPU throttling issue.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

I have the same issue and I'm seeing more and more people with the same problem on both platforms. I've been trying for months to find a solution but no luck.

Support have given up on it and don't seem to be taking it as a serious issue, I've sent emails but just never hear back. I made a video of it here:

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

I have the same problem.

I am a sound designer for a cruise ship. I’ve just landed in Vancouver because I’ve got to get on the ship tomorrow and try to figure this out. They have had show stops in production shows which had lost everyone’s faith in RME.

I am taking some thunderbolt hard drives on with me, as after trying everything over emails with the onboard tech, the only thing I can think of is play the tracks from an external source. Plus update to the later OS.

I’m also taking a DiGiCo UB MADI on with me, as there needs to be a solution.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Also do we know if there is a way to reset and not loose audio.

I’ve just updated the computer to the latest OS and the tracks are being run from an external thunderbolt drive. It has still jumped to the bit crushed audio.

Hardware is
Two Mac Mini’s running redundant
• 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7
• 16GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
• 256GB PCIe-based Flash Storage

Both go into a DirectOut.BLDS MADI Switcher (though I’ve tested without and it still faults)

Then into a Yamaha DM2K

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Same glitches problem on a MacBook Pro 2018.
Sometimes, it turns for 1 hour without a problem then it begins to glitch. Everytime there is a glitch, I loose the sync with the midi devices connected to the Fireface UFX.
I use the official USBC to USB cable from Apple. I tryed every ports of the MacBook Pro.
I've to run a show with other musicians with this computer and the RME. At this time, this is impossible... We can't be on a stage with this problem.
When can we hope to have a solution/ a new driver?

Thanks

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Until a driver is released that is stable, is there a way to reset or rescue the audio without stopping playback? Jackvdven in his YouTube video resets the sample rate and rescues the audio, unfortunately this causes a delay of around 500ms/1s which would throw the musicians playing to click off the beat.

33

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

@cesarhanssens and tk_: Please use driver 3.09 to check if the reset is automatic (glitch instead of continuing bitcrusher). It would also help if you provide some logs when the error shows up.

@tk_: Are you sure you used driver 3.08 so far? Mac Minis doing this sounds like driver 3.07 or before.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

I precise that for me, the problem is some glitches and the lost of the midi sync. I never had bitcrusher problems. Glitches appears for 2 seconds and disappears in main cases. Every time there is a glitch, I loose the midi.

At one time, a big pink noise, at a really higher volume than the music has appeared and no possibilities to stop it until the reboot of the Fireface. It was just one time so I can't be sure that it's the same compatibility problem.

I'll send the console logs asap.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

I installed the driver 3.09 and finally captured some log info during my last glitch event. I am running a new MacBook Pro 2018, OSX High Sierra 10.13.6, 2.9GHz, 32 GB Ram, Radeon 560X. I have  BFP connected via the original USB cable to an Apple USB>USB-C adapter. I've tried all the ports, and I get a glitch audio event approximately every 5-10 minutes with active use inside of Logic or Cubase, and occasionally while listening to music via the web, i.e. youtube.

FWIW, I also have Siri turned off.

I have two log entries, the first is searching for RME. 11:54 was when I experienced the glitch in the audio. I was playing Keyscape within Cubase. Other instruments have caused the glitch as well.

The second log files are when I select my computer and choose 'Errors and Faults' from the console. I posted the errors at 11:54...

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

I think I got my issue sorted:

I noticed every time I got the audio glitch, the console log showed the CoreBluetooth error. So I removed all Bluetooth devices from the System Preferences in OSX -- I only had a pair of headphones listed. I also turned off my Bluetooth for the MacBook.

Now I am not experiencing any issues. In fact, I also had a persistent problem in Logic with CPU spikes making it unusable with most streaming instruments like Kontakt and Keyscape, now that issue has gone away too!! Logic feels rock solid again.

I don't know the specifics of why this worked, and I guess I need to scrap may plans to buy a Bluetooth Magic Mouse and instead get a wired mouse, but this small tweak has totally fixed the biggest headache with my DAW setup. I feel like I can make music again. Hopefully this helps some other users out there.

FWIW, I did change a couple other things as I was going through the system preferences, these may or may not have affected my outcome: I turned off Notifications for all apps, turned off system sounds, and disabled Siri. I also at one point had a thunderbolt ethernet adapter plugged in, since I wasn't using it, I deleted it under Network settings.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

I spoke too soon, still get the occasional glitch, it's random time intervals. Here are my log entries for the recent event at 9:33:32. This appears to be the same issue posted about in this thread https://www.forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=26096 where 3.08 was supposed to fix it. Not the case on my new MacBook. Turning off Bluetooth reduced a lot of the overload issues I was getting in Logic, and seems to have helped reduce the glitching, but it is still happening:

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

I think I am getting the heart of the problem here. I believe on my MacBook it is the AppleSmartBatterManager that is causing the system overload. I can replicate this every minute at the same time. The Smart Battery Manager runs on a 60 second cycle, and if I have a lot of processes going on inside of Logic, like a heavy CPU soft synth, then it creates a CPU spike, which overloads the CoreAudio. You can see in these log entries at 11:15:55. The default Starting poll shows as kernel (AppleSmartBatteryManager) in the console info pane:

default 11:15:55.004017 -0500 kernel Starting poll type 4

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Do these interruptions go away when running on battery? That was a very popular test/trick for a similar issue on Windows laptops.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

No luck with running off battery. It still occurs. I can replicate the issue every time now. Every 60 seconds that AppleSmartBatteryManager is polling the system and like clock work I get the cpu spike. If the cpu overloads it overloads the RME audio stream. Usually this is caused by playing a cpu intensive softsynth, but I have had it occur while streaming music and multitasking on the computer. So potentially other apps adding to the cpu hit to cause it. I’ve tried using pmset command in the OS X terminal to set the power/sleep settings for the computer, to treat it like it is a desktop system, but the same polling for the battery occurs.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

The next step in examinating these issues is a simple one, although not very comfortable. Please put your RME interfaces into Class Compliant mode, so they run without RME driver (and without Settings dialog and TotalMix FX). They will use Apple's own driver which is part of the OS. That will help a lot to decide how to continue here. Thanks to everyone for your feedback!

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

My issue appears in CC mode too, and at same interval with the smartbatterymanager polling in the console. Must be a High Sierra issue.

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

Hi

I will be far from my RME for the next week.

Can’t test anything before september...

Re: RME UFX II weird bit crusher distortion problem

I submitted an Apple Bug report through their dev site, # 43737017. It references the MacBook AppleSmartBatteryManager.kext polling process overloading coreaudio streams. I also spoke with Chris Laurel with Logic Pro X support, claurel@apple.com. He is aware of the issue and sending it up the food chain. Feel free to connect with him if you need anything. From my understanding reading the source code on the battery manager, and digging into the IOKit development documentation, the polling method belongs to the same WorkLoop as the CoreAudio driver, and the battery manager and coreaudio events are basically fighting over who gets priority. So running low buffer samples on a CoreAudio application runs the risk of the two processes overlapping on the same process thread. There also appears to be an issue with the battery polling starting and then restarting, as though something is always interrupting its initial cycle. This occurs always regardless of what applications you are running, and could be leading to the CPU spike. Perhaps on your driver side there is a way to run its processing on a separate workloop, or adjust the thread priority to be higher than the system kernel process?

This is the source code I reviewed:

AppleSmartBattery.cpp
AppleSmartBattery.h
AppleSmartBatteryCommands.h
AppleSmartBatteryManager.cpp
AppleSmartBatteryManager.h
AppleSmartBatteryManagerUserClient.cpp
AppleSmartBatteryManagerUserClient.h
Info.plist

This is some helpful info from the Apple IOKit Fundamentals docs:

Work Loop Architecture
The I/O Kit’s work-loop mechanism mitigates the performance penalty exacted by context switching, a by-product of the underlying event-handling model commonly used in some operating systems. To guarantee a single-threaded context for event handling, this model completes everything on one thread. Unfortunately, the transfer of work to the thread requires a switch in the context of the event-bearing thread. More precisely, when this thread goes from a running context to a non-running context, its current register state must be saved. When the secure thread completes its work, the state of the originating thread is restored and control branches back to the function originally referenced by the thread. This switching back and forth between thread contexts consumes cycles.
The work-loop model works quite differently for I/O commands and timer events. In these instances, the thread of the respective event source simply grabs the mutex lock held by the work loop. No other event from any source can be processed until the Action routine for the current event returns. Although the lock is mutually exclusive, it doesn’t prevent reentrancy. Also, you can have multiple work loops in the same driver stack, and this increases the possibility of deadlock. However, work loops do avoid self-deadlocks because they are based on a recursive lock: They always check to see if they are the thread that currently own the lock.
The way the I/O Kit manages interrupt event sources does involve context switching. The completion routines for interrupts run on the work loop’s thread and not on the thread delivering the interrupt. Context switching is required in this case because the interrupt controller must immediately dispatch direct (primary) interrupts to other threads to run the completion routines for those interrupts.

I also found this presentation extremely useful in understanding the priority aspect of X Dispatcher/Schedule part of IOKit. Just passing on in case it helps: http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~cs9242/06/l … eading.pdf
