Topic: Digiface USB is incredible

Hey,

I just want to say that I recently picked up a Digiface USB and I'm amazed by the performance I get with it.
I can use it comfortably with 0 dropouts at 32 samples with a medium sized project that includes Keyscape and Superior Drummer 3 among others.

I have an HDSP 9632 and also a 9652 and I'm getting better performance with the Digiface.

Good job RME

Now if only you guys could update it to make it class compliant to use it on iOS (if possible), it would be absolutely great.

Re: Digiface USB is incredible

Are you using all the inputs and outputs? and what is your routing like?

Super interested in picking up a digiface USB myself.

Re: Digiface USB is incredible

The Digiface is connected to 4 Profire 2626 boards for 32 inputs and 32 outputs with the Digiface as master clock.
I have 8 headphone submixes (each profire has 2 headphones outs).
Other than that, not a very complicated routing.
Haven't tried recording all 32 inputs at the same time yet, but I don't think I'll have any issues but we'll see.

Sweet, im hoping to do a similar thing but will probably use 4 focusrite octopre dynamics to my daw then eventually back out to a small compact 32 channel board for stereo mixdown.

Please let us know how you get on if you test 32 inputs recording/monitoring at once, as thats the feature that interests me personally, the digiface usb seems like a bargain if it works as i expect.

I have one, running at 32 inputs works fine > also with two focusrite clarett octo pres

I agree on both.
Class compliant would be amazing, even if it would just get the phones out working that would be a great addition, as I am often using the Digiface as a mobile dac and I would rather use my iPad than my Laptop.

Re: Digiface USB is incredible

Really happy with mine with the little use ive had so far, anybody know if its possible to run two of them. I assume so long as they are on seperate USB buses they should be fine and you'd get two instances of total mix and you would see two interfaces in your DAWs hardware settings? Just have the route stuff accordingly.

64 channels in and 64 channels out would be incredible for the price.

Re: Digiface USB is incredible

See manual, up to three, need to be synched between each other using ADAT ports.

Depends on your mainboard and chipset.

With my mainboard I could connect even two UFX+ which have even more ports.

But at a certain point I had to isolate them between dedicated USB3 controller,
because some USB2 devices (ie. Bluetooth USB or USB hubs), seemed to misbehave.

A good board for the UFX+ was the Sonnet Allegro Pro PCIe with 4x USB3 controller.
Unfortunately not available anymore, maybe you find one on eBay.
Needs a PCIe x4 socket on your mainboard.

But maybe it runs already out of the box...

You could also try the Sonnet Allegro (without "Pro") to isolate at least one of the two if there are issues.

The drivers of those cards are very nice, they use MSI, message signalled interrupts, which is a better
scaling interrupt model which has advantages especially under load.

Win7 needs drivers (available) in Win10 these drivers are already included and should be tried 1st.

Re: Digiface USB is incredible

How would i sync them to each other, just do an adat loop between two of them?, oh man wouldnt that mean i lose 8 of the input/outputs. Its not a deal breaker as i dont actually need 64 channels, my plan was originally 32 but now im aiming for 48, because picking up another digiface usb is pretty cheap.

Re: Digiface USB is incredible

With 2 Devices i.e.
Digiface 1 - ADAT 4 OUT -> ADAT 4 IN - Digiface 2

With 3 Devices i.e.
Digiface 1 - ADAT 3 OUT -> ADAT 4 IN - Digiface 2
Digiface 1 - ADAT 4 OUT -> ADAT 4 IN - Digiface 3

You need to work then with 2 / 3 TM FX instances and can't route channels across TM FX instances.
Each TM FX instance is a routing entity of its own.

Alternatively use 2 RayDATs, which you could sync internally by a 3-pin cable which you connect between the internal plugs SYNC OUT on one card and SYNC IN on the other. The 3-pin cable is part of the delivery.

UFX+

Some of the higher end RME gear is amazing but way out my modest home studio budget at the moment, thats why the digiface usb was on my radar, it has allowed me future expandability to 32 ins and outs for a few hundred bucks, which is incredible. Its hard to pass up potentially picking up another one for the price so i could have upto 64in/outs.

I honestly doubt im ever going to need more than 64 in/out.

Re: Digiface USB is incredible

Yes the 2 digifaces must be in sync, but not to each other per cable per se. If you have for example 8 identical AD/DA converters with adat in outs. Simply using one as master to the digiface 1 and the same device as master to a DA/AD connected to digiface 2, which is then master to that digiface will make them all in sync, without sacrificing a adat port.
