Topic: DURec and 3 TB drive

Does anyone know why a brand new 3 TB drive would show FS Error on the UFX?  I've tried a bunch of things- reformat, partitions of various sizes & places, etc.  I was sure one of those things I tried was to make the 1st partition 500 MB, FAT32.  Have there been problems?  Connected over USB 3.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: DURec and 3 TB drive

Are you sure that drive was MBR? GPT will not work. And 3 TB most probaly not too. The first partition with 500 MB should have worked, though.

Thanks- sorry for the delay.
Can you clarify what MBR and GPT are?  What is the max drive size the UFX will see?

Easy to search with Google: GPT vs MBR

In regards to partition sizes, tools, see here for reference:

For formatting disk:
- MBR
- FAT32 with 32k cluster size
- Make sure there is no first hidden partition
- For smaller volumes maybe up to 128 GB use https://www.heise.de/download/product/h … tool-97463
- For bigger volumes, like in your case, use guiformat: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index. … format.htm

Re: DURec and 3 TB drive

I asked because I couldn't tell if MBR/GPT were RME-specific things or not.  I looked into it reasonably well, and see that MBR is needed (although I think I have gotten GPT to work in the past).  I'm on Mac OS, and it seems to be picky about what it will format as MBR-- my guess is has something to do with size, but I didn't find anything on that.  I did find an older 250 GB EIDE (!) drive that formatted OK and worked in some tests.  I still don't totally understand all the limitations and if RME has made them clear, but it works OK right now.

But my original issue is not resolved– the 3 TB drive can't be formatted with MBR (by Mac OS, anyway), even when I made a 100 GB first partition.  The drive limit for FAT32 should be 8 TB.  I did just realize it has a USB 3 port-- maybe UFX won't deal with that?

Re: DURec and 3 TB drive

The typical drive limit for FAT 32 is 2 TB (with standard 512 clusters). Our implementation does not support configurations that make zero sense in real-world. Even the 2 TB is a bit nonsense as no one will ever record such an amount (and long time of) audio.

If you format the first partition to a reasonable size it should be detected and work. If not please use a different drive, or the recommended (not expensive) SanDisk Extreme thumb drive.

Re: DURec and 3 TB drive

Well that could've been a smoother delivery.  It makes zero sense to tell me my configuration makes zero sense.  The whole problem is how much trouble I've had finding out definitely what RME's implementation actually is.  The giant "what drive do you use" thread is not a helpful way get that info out.  Sorry to trouble you all.

Re: DURec and 3 TB drive

It's really pretty clear, FAT32 with its 2tb limit.

And the SanDisk Cruzer Extreme 64 & 128gb works 100% for me (and others)

Has anyone tried the fast Patriot thumb drives, they claim higher data transfer rate  for the Supersonic Magnum 2.

Re: DURec and 3 TB drive

Fat32 and MBR are limited in terms of size of HardDisk that they can support. Go https://ursuperb.com/gpt-vs-mbr-which-one-is-the-best/ to know more.
