Topic: Madi face Monitoring

Hello, I'm a complete newb to the madi world and I have a few questions I hope will have simple questions. I'm currently running a burl mothership with a madi face USB and outboard preamps. My question is how do I playback with madi? How do I connect my monitors? Currently I have to switch audio device to windows audio and I can live monitor at all. Any help is appreciated

Re: Madi face Monitoring

Typically you would add a BDA8 DAC card to your Burl, connect Madiface MADI out to B80 MADI in, and monitor out of the Burl like that. If you have no slots left in the B80, you would need to get a seperate MADI DAC unit.

If I Have understood you correctly.

Re: Madi face Monitoring

Thank you Simon for your kind reply! I've posted to many forums and yours is the first I've had. Is there any way you could explain this setup in more detail? I'm currently running two bad4 cards so there are plenty slots left. If I get a bad 8 card then I can monitor and playback audio via the madiface audio driver? How would I connect a headphone monitoring amp with this setup? Also how do I connect monitors? This is my first foray outside of prosumer all inclusive interfaces and I'm a bit confused.

Re: Madi face Monitoring

The idea behind madi is .. one wire .. 64 channels IN and 64 channels OUT.

The Burl Mothership is the housing for an i.e. MADI card and analog / digital expansion modules.

For each analog/digital daugther card you need to assign MADI channels out of the 64 without overlaps.
This seems to be done by jumpers.

And of course you need for your main monitors a D/A converter with 2 outputs.
And for phones a phones output, dont know on which module they have it.
Otherwise you need to connect a Phones Preamps as well to this unit, like i.e. ADI-2 Pro.

Then each input and output of the Mothership has one channel assigned out of 1..64 IN and 1..64 out.

On the MADIface USB you assign then
Main Monitor and Phones to the proper MADI OUTPUT channel.

Thats it.

In terms of routing and TM configuration my primer may help.

Re: Madi face Monitoring

Ducksalot: I would advise you to read the Burl and Madiface manuals from front to back, with particular emphasis on example setups. Possibly also consider getting some help from a systems specialist at your dealer or elsewhere. I think you need to increase your base level of knowledge to make the right choices from here on in. For instance you need to consider what your monitor control will be. There are too many variables to cover in forum posts. If you really get stuck, pm me and we can do a skype call.

Re: Madi face Monitoring

Thanks for the replies! Simon I would love to do a skype call if you are willing to volunteer your time. Itlooks like I need a bad8 card in order to route the signal out. But can anyone explain how exactly this would connect to a monitoring device and provide example products? It looks there is a db25
Cable on the bad8 cards, so this would break out into 8 xlr cables and two of them (routed as mains) would go into the monitoring device and configured through total mix software? Correct me if I'm wrong!
