Topic: Combining HDSPe AIO, AI4S-192 AIO, AO4S-192 AIO and balanced breakout

Hi,

I've been using the HDSPe AIO for some years now, very satisfied with it. Speakers (Adam A7X) are connected to the balanced breakout cable using XLR (Hardware output Analog 1/2).

Have a mic preamp attached to the balanced breakout cable (Hardware input Analog 1). In the future I'll probably attach another mic preamp to it (Hardware input Analog 2).

Recently I've acquired the AI4S-192 AIO and AO4S-192 AIO expansion cards, which I want to use for looping a tapedeck and a graphic equalizer. Both are connected unbalanced using jack to RCA cables:

- HDSPe AIO to tapedeck: AO4S-192 AIO output 1/2 (Hardware output Analog 3/4)
- Tapedeck back to HDSPe AIO: AI4S-192 AIO input 1/2 (Hardware input Analog 3/4)
- HDSPe AIO to graphic equalizer: AO4S-192 AIO output 3/4 (Hardware output Analog 5/6)
- Tapedeck back to graphic equalizer: AI4S-192 AIO input 3/4 (Hardware input Analog 5/6)

Are these correct? I've also experimented with the Breakout Cable: XLR setting on/off, which lowers the level of the unbalanced outputs by -6dB when set to on (also according to the manual), followed by switching the Output Level settings accordingly (+4dBu Output with XLR on, -10dBV with XLR off).

Also, how do I need to set the Input Level? I've got the jack inputs of the AI4S-192 AIO, which are unbalanced, and the XLR inputs of the breakout cable, which are balanced.

I've currently got it running at -10dBV (unbalanced, consumer audio level) at the moment, as you can see in the screenshot, but will this have negative effects on my XLR inputs in any way? Same for the -10dBV on the AIO's own XLR outputs to the speakers?

For reference: was running the in- and outputs at +4dBu before the installation of the expansion cards because everything was balanced XLR connected.

It would be nicer if there were options for selecting the levels of the AIO's own inputs and outputs independently from the expansion cards inputs and outputs. Why isn't this an option in Hammerfall DSP? Is this because of hardware limitations or is it something else? Or has just simply nobody at RME ever thought about this?

Notice the 5.0dB makeup gain from Hardware input 5/6 to Hardware output 1/2.

"XLR" needs to be enabled, see https://www.forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=9886
