Topic: External FX w/Cubase and an RME

Hi.

HDSPe AIO PCIe, that I use with Cubase.

My old sc was an M-Audio 24/96 Delta, which was 2 in x 2 out (analog). I wanted to use an ext effect inside Cubase, so I had to buy  a second Delta. Cubase doesn't require a 2nd card per ce; I just needed the extra ins and outs.

I currently have one RME  HDSPe, that I use with an RME BO9632XLRMKH breakout cable. Is there a way to get an ext effect going without having to buy a new card?

Thanks in advance.

Re: External FX w/Cubase and an RME

I assume your external effects need to be connected via analog connection. Thus you require 2 analog inputs and 2 analog outputs for stereo operation (per external effect or you need to chain the external effects).

Assuming that you used your analog outputs already to connect your speakers, then you need both analog expansion boards for the AIO to get additional four analog inputs and outputs:

rme_ai4s192_aio_expansion_board   €199
rme_ao4s192_aio_expansion_board  €199
AIO alone costs                                    €619
TOTAL:                                                €1017

The analog expansion makes the AIO a quite expensive interface.
For this price you get RME recording interfaces which are equipped with 8 analog I/Os (IN and OUT):
RME Fireface UC                                 €  899
RME Fireface UCX                               €1199 (UCX has quicker converters, FX effects, autoset, USB2 and FW400)

Thank you for the response.

Correct.

Correct.

So, I can do this with the rme_ai4s192_aio_expansion_board, and the  rme_ao4s192_aio_expansion_board? Sorry, but I was a little confused with AIO alone costs €619. You mean the card? That's money already spent, tat I would not now have to lay out. Or, something else?

Cheers.

Re: External FX w/Cubase and an RME

You didn't tell when you bought the AIO. whether its possible to give it back and take another recording interface instead
that offers directly more analog I/Os.

So yes, you only need to get / buy the expansion cards.

Re: External FX w/Cubase and an RME

Thanks again.

The card was purchased many years ago.

So, do I need two extra PCIe slots on the MB for this? My MB has two, one of which is taken up by the card. Looking here:

http://www.rme-audio.de/en/products/hds … boards.php

It appears as tho that is both exp cards together - do both need a dedicated slot? Meaning I would need a MB with three slots...

I didnt look yet but usually these cards simply need the slot of the case not of the mainboard.
There will be extra cables/connector between the PCB of the AIO and the 2 additional add on card.
See handbook.

Thanks. I looked at the handbook. It says "insert into an empty slot". Case, or MB? Doesn't say.

Plus, some really smart person decided to put only a partial pic in the manual, making it impossible to see the entire card.

Cheers.

Re: External FX w/Cubase and an RME

Hi,

I was short in time and wrote from memory. My pointer to handbook was ok, but each of the expansion cards
have their own handbook, which contains all the information that you are looking for.

https://archiv.rme-audio.de/download/ai4s192_e.pdf
https://archiv.rme-audio.de/download/ao4s192_e.pdf

On the product webpage follow the link to "Analog Expansion Boards": http://www.rme-audio.de/en/products/hds … 27a=0#AIAO

There you find the handbook links:

Re: External FX w/Cubase and an RME

Yes - the box in red is exactly where I got the manuals from. Again THOSE manuals say "insert into an empty slot". Case, or MB? Doesn't say.

Plus, there is an INCOMPLETE pic of the card, not showing the part that would or would not go tot he MB

I will contact support, TY.

Cheers.

Re: External FX w/Cubase and an RME

The expansion boards mount on the case (not the mobo) and connect to the card via cables, seems simple enough but I'm not really an expert wink.

Cheers.

Sorry but I do not understand your problems. Maybe you didn't read the handbook.

So again:
https://archiv.rme-audio.de/download/ai4s192_e.pdf
Page Nr. 4, Chapter 5. Pls read the whole chapter, but for now lets concentrate on point number 5:

"5. Insert the AI into a free slot, press and fasten the screw. The AI needs no slot on the motherboard,
but includes a stabilizing edge, which fits in both PCI and PCIe slots.
"

The photo there shows clearly the connection between the AIO and the expansion card,
which need to be connected by a ribbon cable.

It should be obvious after having read point #5, that the expansion cards only
optionally need a PCI / PCIe slot on the mainboard simply to get more stability.

The bigger picture you have on the product page of the AIO, or simply look at the card when opening the package.

http://www.rme-audio.de/images/products/products_hdspe_aio_1b.jpg

And here you can see, that the addon cards have edges, but without contacts, remember only for stability:
